Introduction To Apparel and Pattern Design Careers

Dallas, fashion center of the Southwest, has one of the largest concentrations of women's and children's wear manufacturers in the nation. The apparel industry offers many opportunities to talented, capable people skilled in apparel design and pattern design.

The apparel designer takes an original design idea and converts it into an industrial paper pattern used in the mass production of clothing. The pattern drafter converts the fashion sketch or original garment into an industrial paper pattern used in the mass production of clothing. Draping is the skill of developing a pattern by placing cloth over a dress form. Both techniques are combined to develop a design idea and to develop mass production patterns.

Both apparel and pattern design are exciting and profitable careers for people with a flair for fashion and the willingness to work hard. Knowledge of mass production equipment, textiles, sketching, sewing techniques, computer aided design and related skills such as grading patterns, cutting, and pressing are needed in the industry.

El Centro College's Apparel and Pattern Design Programs

Both the Apparel Design and Pattern Design programs are two year associate degree programs. Related subjects give you an understanding of textiles, sketching, computer aided design and costume history. For both programs, your classroom experience is supplimented with field trips to manufacturers and visits by guest lecturers. Upon your successful completion of El Centro's Apparel Design program, you are prepared to become an assistant in a design department, or successful completion of El Centro's pattern design program qualifies you to be an assistant in a pattern drafting department. In order to be admitted in either of these worthwhile programs, you must fulfill all requirements for admission to El Centro College.
