Hints: Finding the Equation of a Line

Given a graph

Complete the form y=mx+b (the slope-intercept form) by observing the graph.

y=____x+____

1. Find the slope by observing

2.Find the y-intercept by observing

3. Simplify the equation  where the line crosses the y-axisvertical change over horizontal change between any two points on the line.

Given the slope and a point or two points.

  • When given the slope and a point. Use the point-slope form, point-slope form      where m is the slope and the point is line.
  • When given two points.
  1. Find the slope using m equals y2 minus y1 divided by x2 minus x1.
  2. Use the point-slope form, y minus y1 equals m quota x minus x1 where the slope is m and x1 minus y1can be either point.
