ABOUT THE PROFESSION

The program is designed to prepare individuals to perform the duties of Medical Staff Services Coordinator in health care settings, including hospitals, managed care organizations, and credentialing organizations. There is an increasing demand for individuals who are prepared for this profession.

A Medical Staff Services Coordinator provides credentialing and monitoring services for physicians and allied health professionals. These individuals are responsible for managing credentialing, privileging, practitioner/provider organizations, and regulatory compliance in the diverse healthcare industry. They promote quality standards for the administrative management of the healthcare professionals. Confidentiality and legal issues associated with accredited services of health care organizations, peer review and impaired physician issues are included in the responsibilities of a Medical Staff Services Coordinator. They are familiar with state laws, regulatory guidelines, and health care organization accreditation standards.

Salaries are excellent. Assistants nationally average $40,000 - $50,000 per year. Consultants with experience can make over $70,000/yr.

Upon program completion and experience working in the field as required for the specific credential (Certified Provider Credentialing Specialist (CPCS) or Certified Professional Medical Services Management(CPMSM), graduates will be eligible to sit for the National Association of Medical Staff Services (NAMSS) Certification examination.

Credit can be awarded for some modules of the NAMSS independent study program toward the Medical Staff Services Program at El Centro College.
