The English Department of El Centro College will once again host the annual El Centro’s Literary Competition in conjunction of the 2007-2008 Literary Competition sponsored by the League for Innovation in the Community College. We are extremely pleased to announce that the 2006-2007 competition was a tremendous success. We would like to cordially invite everyone who’s eligible to participate in this competition. All currently enrolled students (credit classes only) are eligible to submit any number of entries in any of the following categories: Poetry, Essay, One-Act Play and Fiction. Entries must be original works and will be evaluated by a panel of English and Writing Professors from El Centro College. Winning entries will proceed to a district level competition, and district winners to a national level competition.

AWARDS:

National Level:
  • First prize...$500
  • Second prize...$200
  • Third prize...$100
Campus Level:
  • First prize...$35
  • Second prize...$25
  • Third prize...$15

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Entries must be submitted in two forms: An email attachment or a CD in Microsoft Word Document saved as “First name initial Last name_Category” (example: JDoe_essay), and a hard copy on an 8.5x11inch white paper.
  • Each entry must have a cover page that includes the author’s name, home address, phone number, institution and title of entry.
  • All entries must have the author’s first name initial, last name and college acronym on the right hand corner of each entry page. (Example: JDoe elc)
  • Maximum Length:
    • Poetry/67 lines
    • Essay/2,000 words
    • One-Act Play/3,000 words
    • Fiction/3,000 words
  • Deadline:
    • Campus level submission deadline: March 25th, 2008
    • Announcement for Campus level winners: April 10th, 2008
  • Entries must be submitted with official entry forms, which are available at Communications and Math Office (A341) or the campus coordinator.
