Students
The students in Middle College are students in
grades 9 through 12 who have the academic potential to succeed at
college work but are at risk of not realizing their full ability
in a large traditional high school. For these low achieving, high
potential students whose past grades may not be a good reflection
of their ability, Middle College can be a place to make a fresh
start. Moving into a new community of students and teachers gives
some students a chance to reevaluate their goals and their attitude
and to reach higher levels of achievement.
Although students accepted to Middle College may
have had academic or attendance problems at other schools, they
will not exhibit extreme discipline problems. They will demonstrate
that they have the responsibility and maturity to cope with the
relative freedom of the Middle College environment. Middle College
students will interact with one another and with college students
and staff in a cooperative, constructive manner.
Students apply for admission to Middle College.
Most students enter in the fall semester; a few are sometimes admitted
in January. Students should be recommended by core teachers and
principals. Students are tested in the El Centro Assessment Center
for reading, writing, and mathematics skills and parents and students
are interviewed by Middle College staff.
